Responsive web design has become a crucial part of most company websites.  For smartphones: Increasing the font size of text, making links easier to press for fingers and rearranging the layout to work on a small, vertical display is ideal. But aside from those points, there’s one other thing that can improve your website on higher resolution devices.

Phones, tablets, and computer screens are squeezing more and more pixels into smaller spaces. For example, the 27″ 5K iMac has a PPI (Pixels Per Inch) of 218, compare that to a 21″ screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 which has a PPI of 100.13. That’s more than twice the amount of pixels in the same amount of space.

SOPA, PIPA & ACTA

You may have heard in the news recently of all the controversy around the Stop Online Piracy Act – a United States bill introduced by Lamar S. Smith.  The purpose of the bill is to extend the ability of the U.S Government for fighting Online Piracy.  Any website that has copyright material uploaded to it by any user (not even an employee) would have to take responsibility for it – this could mean a prison sentence of up to 5 years.  The majority of tech companies have an issue with the bill because it is quite vague and gives the Government a lot of leverage.

The future of the web: Why Flash is outdated

It has become abundantly clear over the passed few years that the Adobe Flash is dying.  Mostly, due to the popularity of Apple’s iPhone and iPad products which do not support it.

Apple aren’t the only company or people that are against the Flash Player: Occupy Flash is a website dedicated to the extinction of the software – and rightly so.

Having a website that is made partially or entirely out of Flash can be devastating to your users.  Taking in to consideration the small percentage of people that won’t be able to view your website there is another not-so-obvious effect.  Search Engines such as Google, Microsoft Bing or Duckduckgo can not read Flash, and if they don’t know what content is on your website then they can’t forward this on to potential visitors.
