SOPA, PIPA & ACTA

You may have heard in the news recently of all the controversy around the Stop Online Piracy Act – a United States bill introduced by Lamar S. Smith.  The purpose of the bill is to extend the ability of the U.S Government for fighting Online Piracy.  Any website that has copyright material uploaded to it by any user (not even an employee) would have to take responsibility for it – this could mean a prison sentence of up to 5 years.  The majority of tech companies have an issue with the bill because it is quite vague and gives the Government a lot of leverage.

There was a reason why I spoke about content in my first blog and this is because people are often tempted to keyword stuff. This is where you write your content and then randomly put your keywords in where they simply don’t fit. What I would suggest is writing about who you are what you do in depth. If you write your content well then it makes keyword selection quite easy as you’ve already written them somewhere.

Ofcom boosts 4G mobile coverage plan

With the popularity of smart phones and tablets rapidly increasing the current mobile internet just doesn’t quite cut the mustard.

According to the Office for National Statistics 45% of people surveyed said they made use of the net while on the move, compared with 31% in 2010 and studies suggest that mobile internet usage may take over desktop internet usage by 2014.

Ofcom has revised proposals for its fourth-generation mobile spectrum auction, adding measures that could bring coverage to 98% of the UK meaning that rural areas will see much improved mobile internet connectivity.

This is all great news, but how does this effect whats on the web?

More and more companies are deploying mobile websites to react to the volume of people using smartphones and tablets to access the internet, although there are vast amounts of websites on the internet that unsuitable for mobile use.

A major overhaul of web domains good or bad?

The BBC announced yesterday that applications will soon open for new top-level domains in the biggest change to the system in over two decades.

From today it will be possible to register almost any word as a web address suffix. Familiar endings like .com and .org could potentially be joined by the likes of .pepsi, .virgin or .itv.

There are arguments for and against this introduction of custom domain suffix.

Peter Dengate Thrush, a former chairman of Icann’s board of directors, stated

“No-one would design a domain name system now for several billion users just using a couple of names that we started the system with in 1985.”
